Symptoms of Malaria
Malaria is a serious disease that can cause death if not treated quickly. If you think you have contracted malaria, it's important to act quickly. If you're unsure about the symptoms you may have received a malaria test. Know your body and know the symptoms of malaria so that you can get the treatment quickly
Malaria symptoms are different for every person.
Some people may have no symptoms or mild symptoms, while others may experience severe illness.
The most common form of malaria is Plasmodium malariae infection, which occurs in areas where the mosquito species Anopheles gambiae lives and breeds. People who live in these regions are at risk for getting malaria because they're exposed to infected mosquitoes that can transmit the disease when bitten by an infected mosquito (or when their blood gets mixed with someone else's). The more intense the infection, the higher your chances of developing severe disease like fever and vomiting—and potentially death if left untreated.
Malaria symptoms include fever, chills and fatigue. Other common symptoms include vomiting and nausea, headache and joint pain.
If you have malaria:
Do not go to the doctor because it’s unlikely that your symptoms will be treated successfully with a prescription drug alone. If you are taking medicine for another condition or if you are pregnant or nursing a baby—or if you have any other reason to avoid drugs—you should discuss this with your doctor first before beginning treatment with anti-malarial medication (see “What is the best way to use anti-malarial drugs?” below).
Call 911 right away if someone has malaria symptoms in their home. In addition to calling 911 directly from your phone while they're still at home (or outside of it), make sure someone else knows what's happening so they can call too if needed later on!
Symptoms of malaria can be mild or severe.
Mild symptoms include fever, chills and nausea. Severe symptoms are more serious, including fever, chills and nausea with vomiting or headaches (a headache with an unusual sensation in the back of your head). A person with severe malaria also may have joint pain that lasts for several days after their illness.
